His career took off thanks to a medium that is in many ways extraordinary: Polaroid photography, whose expressive potential had already been masterfully investigated by<strong> Andy Warhol <\/strong>since the 1950s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 1970, John Mc Kendry, curator of photography at the MoMA, encouraged Mapplethorpe to use a Polaroid camera. In this way, he started building the \u2018gallery of personalities\u2019 that would make him internationally famous, and which is now on display in Naples.
