Recent cases of sexual abuse and blackmail\n(I wish the perpetrators to receive heavy prison\nsentences) are causing a wave of \"politically correct\"\nreactions to sex and nudity, even in the art world.\nWhich is exaggerated, if not plain wrong. Nudity has\nalways existed in art: since antiquity, the search for\nbeauty has found expression in the representation of\nthe nude body, whether male or female. Among many\nalarming episodes, I should mention the removal\nfrom the Manchester Art Gallery in London (500,000\nvisitors a year) of John William Waterhouse\u2019s \"Hylas\nand the Nymphs\" (1896), a pre-Raphaelite painting\nwhich shows a group of naked nymphs tempting a\nhandsome (and clothed) young man.\nThe museum\u2019s curator, Clare Gannaway, had\nthe painting replaced with a notice explaining\nthat a temporary space had been left \u201cto prompt\nconversation. \u2026 What do you think? \".\nReason for the removal: it\u2019s a misogynistic painting,\n\u201cpresenting the female body as a passive decorative\nform, a body to be used by men\u201d.\nA stunning 93% of the visitors answered that\nthey were against the removal, and many others\nstuck notes on the empty wall containing jokes or\ncomplaints.\nLet\u2019s hope that the painting will be put back up.\nFortunately, the opposite has happened in America.\nTwo girls (one of them, alas, Italian) put together\nan online petition asking the Met (New York\u2019s\nMetropolitan Museum of Art) to remove Balthus\u2019s\nfamous painting \"Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Dreaming\". They accused\nthe museum of \"supporting voyeurism and the\nobjectification of children. \"\nIn other words: their allegation was that the museum\nwas promoting paedophilia.\nThe Met wisely refused to remove the painting,\nbut the story has triggered a heated international\ndebate because, unbelievably, quite a few people\nshare the girls\u2019 view.\nThe great Balthus is suspected of a leaning towards\npaedophilia? Get rid of his paintings!\nIn danger, too, are hundreds of masterpieces housed\nin museums, from Caravaggio to Parmigianino,\nas well as many frescoes and statues found in\nchurches (you know, those naked little angels, with\ntheir plump bottoms, might put nasty thoughts into\nyour head).\nNot to mention wonderful ancient Greek vases, with\ntheir nudes and scenes of pederasty.\nOh yes, they\u2019re all amazingly beautiful, but, please,\nlet\u2019s bulldoze them away!\nRight. And what about some obscurantist enemies\nof beauty in art?
